Annie Okay at the Hammer Museum

Annie Okay is an original performance theater work, written and directed by Asher Hartman, and inspired by the unintentional colonialist subtext in two of America’s most beloved musicals, Annie Get Your Gun and The King and IAnnie Okay revisits the musical form to look at what our entertainments say about our struggle with race, identity, colonialist politics, and the American tryst with violence. Poetic, dense, funny, and complicated, Annie Okay challenges and surprises audiences as they are led through the Hammer Museum’s expansive lobby and marble terraces following a conceptual narrative performed by Los Angeles-based performance artists and actors. Featuring a score by Devin McNulty and Max Markowitz, choreography by Prumsodun Ok and Carol McDowell, and sculptural costumes by Curt LeMieux, the performance moves between abstract theater, comedy, and relational components that allow audiences to enter into dialogue drawn from the piece’s mix of ragged humor, violence, and sexuality.

Annie Okay is produced in connection with Machine Project’s participation in the Hammer Museum’s Public Engagement Artist Residency Program (A.I.R.)

This event is FREE, however RSVPs are required.

Please park under the museum and check in at the Hammer lobby doors.

Each evening's performance starts PROMPTLY at 8:30, no late entries.

Machine Project

Machine Project is a storefront space in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles that hosts events about all kinds of things we find interesting – scientific talks, poetry readings, musical performances, competitions, group naps, cheese tastings and so forth. We usually do about two events a week, open to the general public and free of charge.
